From the famous animated movie “Ratatouille”, two very right quotes
“Anyone can cook, but only fearless can be great” and
“Not everyone can become the Great Artist but Great Artist can come from anywhere”.
The two quotes fit so well to the designer cake artist who create edible magics, Anandi Iyer Ghosh.
Anandi’s baking hobby got triggered to do something different in 2012, when she ordered a HP theme cake for her elder daughter’s 21st birthday. The cake was very beautiful but was dry and crumbly inside. The incidence motivated her to learn the skills to create a cake that not only looked good but also tasted good.
Anandi is Masters in English Literature and worked for nearly 28 years as a government employee before opting for Voluntary Retirement Scheme(VRS) and turning into a full time baker. Her family includes her husband, two daughters and four dogs. Her hobbies are varied and range from singing and dancing to reading and writing painting, gardening, playing with her dogs and trying out new things – the latest obsession is wood carving and playing guitar. It is her multi talented genetics that is micro visible in her designer cakes with fineness in minor things.
Her journey started in Mumbai as a hobby baker for family and friends. Initially she found difficult to manage family, job and baking at a time. But her heart was in baking and she followed it. She used to bake all night and crawl into bed in the wee hours of the morning only to get up again to reach office. Second obstacle came in terms of shortage of funds. The passion was so strong that she took job as a freelance content writer to address the money factor. So many things to do that even 24 hours a day seemed less. But the passion continued. With time, her elder daughter took control over her writing job. She had now more time as well as funds to devote to her passion. It is rightly said, where there is a will, there’s a way.
In 2014, she had to move to Delhi, along with her husband. She was all well established as a baker with good clientele base when she left Mumbai. She had to start again from scratch in Delhi – baking for friends, handing out samples, etc. It was the time her venture Bake Kart was born. Soon the orders started pouring. The social media advertising on Facebook helped her to reach more people.
She positions herself as custom cake artist and her target audience is people who want customized cakes. She makes designer cakes and cupcakes using fondant, buttercream, whipped cream and chocolate and also muffins, macarons, designer chocolates and sourdough breads. All this is designer stuff and would have to be pre-ordered. The customer would show or explain what they want, and she turns it into reality. Each cake is exclusive. Her USP is designer fondant cakes and carved cakes. She really gives a realistic look to the cakes and unlike most cake artists.
Her creations are winning thousand hearts in Delhi. One of her happy customers testimony calls her as one of the most innovative baker in Delhi. Till now she has baked cakes of more than a hundred designs and shapes – hot wheels, burgers, books, flowers, hearts, basketball, human figures, cubes and what not. Her future plans includes opening a cake studio where she can work undisturbed. She aims to become a household name in designer cake business. She also plans to enter into wedding and chandelier cakes. She aspires to teach baking but only at stage when she does not have the energy to bake.
What keeps her driving is not the money coming in from the passion but the smile, joy and the excitement of the customer after looking the cake. And that honesty is visible in her cakes. To her success means the smile on her customer face and she feels sense of achievement in that.
